The National Level Monitoring Team (NALMOT) has proposed to conduct a series of monitoring visits across various implementing states to proactively address emerging challenges and ensure the successful achievement of objectives outlined in the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP). This initiative aims to boost oil palm cultivation in India, enhancing domestic oil production and reducing dependency on imports.
As part of this initiative, an inspection was conducted on April 15, 2025. During this visit, the team examined the third oil palm field belonging to Sri Bujanga Reddy, which spans an area of 6 acres. The field employs Chrysanthemum as an intercrop, which is known for its ability to improve soil health and maximize land use efficiency. This particular site is located in Vemulanarva village, within the Keshampet mandal of Ranga Reddy District, an area identified for its potential for oil palm cultivation.
The NALMOT team for Telangana consisted of several key members, including Dr. K. Ponnusamy, the Director of the Directorate of Oilseeds Development based in Hyderabad; Dr. G. Vijaya Krishna, a Senior Scientist and Head of the Agricultural Research Station in Aswaraopet; and Smt. Sarojini, the Additional Director of Horticulture specializing in oil palm cultivation. In addition, the team included officials from the Directorate of Oilseeds Development, the Additional Director of Horticulture, the District Horticulture and Sericulture Officer (DHSO), and the Assistant Director of Horticulture (ADH) for the Ranga Reddy District. They were joined by representatives from Value Oil and Gas Services Pvt. Ltd, including Vice President Rama Mohan Rao, who contributed insights on private sector involvement in oil palm cultivation.
During the visit, the farmers expressed a strong interest in adopting oil palm cultivation, demonstrating enthusiasm about the crop’s potential benefits, such as increased income and job opportunities. This positive outlook was bolstered by the support and resources provided under the NMEO-OP framework, which encourages sustainable farming practices and offers financial assistance and technical guidance to farmers embarking on this venture. The interactions highlighted the community’s readiness to embrace innovative agricultural practices, aiming for both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
